What's also interesting about this story is that President Obama worked in this part of Chicago at Altgeld Gardens when he first got out of law school, and must have gotten at least a whiff of the pollution there. It'll be interesting to see what follow up comes from theUS EPA, if any.

Why is this my responsibility? I'm told to don't use this and don't use that; why can't the people who sell us all this stuff get it right so we don't have to figure all this out? I'm glad you told me about the trouble this plastic is causing, but I don't know what to do myself?

Hello, my name is Brittany Ferguson and I am a Howard University student. I will admit, i had never really given much thought about what all was in my hair care products. I am shocked that so many of them have links to cancer. I was also shocked by the video's statement that 1,4 Dioxine would not show up on the ingredient label for many products, even though it is harmful. After watching this video, I immediately checked the ingredients of all of my hair care products and was surprised to see how many of them contained something that had the letters "eth" in them. This is very concerning and makes me want to take much more consideration of the hair products that I buy. I was also alarmed to learn that 97% of relaxers contain 1,4 Dioxine because I relax my hair about every 3 months. I already know that relaxers are not good for hair but I was unaware of just how bad they are.

BP is ridiculous. First of all they shouldn't be allowed to do any more drilling in the Gulf of Mexico until they have cleared up ALL of the damage from their last mistake. They do not deserve any kind of reward for their safety record, even if the oil spill was the only incident that occured. That is enough for a lifetime, who knows how long they will be trying to clean up the mess they made. I hope Louisiana sues them for all they have.

It may be that this problem cannot be solved until we stop using synthetic chemical plastics altogether. Something to consider is the growing use of biodegradable wrappings and bags made from the by-products of crops, such as corn stover. In the weeks ahead look for a piece from Ingrid Lobet on Living on Earth d that has more on what's called "Green Chemistry."

Those are great questions! [do the two movements need to be at odds? How do we reconcile the efforts of naturalists with the efforts of social justice workers? How can environmental justice inform both camps?] I don't think the two camps need to be at odds. This story is an example of how the two movements can come together for a common or at least inter-related purpose or goal. These kinds of "advocacay coalitions" are studied in political science and these kinds of coalitions may form around a specific issue. A great example of how to elevate an issue through this kind of collaboration.
